How big should a turtle tank be?

The general rule for aquatic turtles is 10 gallons of water per inch of shell length. A 4-inch turtle needs at least a 40-gallon tank. Always go bigger if possible — turtles are active swimmers and benefit from extra space. Semi-aquatic turtles also need a dry basking area.

Measure the longest straight line of the shell (SCL).
