Can dogs eat chocolate?
No. Chocolate contains substances called methylxanthines — specifically theobromine and caffeine. These are harmless to humans but deadly dangerous to dogs due to their different metabolism mechanisms. Dogs process theobromine far more slowly than humans, allowing it to build up to toxic levels.
The combined amount of these two substances determines the toxicity of a given food, measured in milligrams per kilogram of body weight (mg/kg).

How much chocolate can a dog eat?
Chocolate can be lethal to dogs. It is generally believed that a combined dose of less than 15.01 mg/kg shouldn't harm your dog. Above that threshold, symptoms become increasingly severe.
The type of chocolate matters enormously — dark chocolate and cocoa powder contain 10-100× more methylxanthines than white chocolate.
How to calculate chocolate toxicity in dogs
Theobromine dose = (Chocolate type × Amount eaten) / Weight
Caffeine dose = (Chocolate type × Amount eaten) / Weight
Total dose = Caffeine dose + Theobromine dose
Where Chocolate type is the concentration of theobromine or caffeine in 1 g of the chocolate product, Amount eaten is in grams, and Weight is in kilograms.
Toxicity thresholds
- <15.01 mg/kg: Your pet should be fine.
- 15.01–34.02 mg/kg: Diarrhea and vomiting likely.
- 34.02–45 mg/kg: Tachyarrhythmia (dangerous rapid heartbeat).
- 45–55.01 mg/kg: Seizures and tremors.
- >55.01 mg/kg: May be fatal.
