How much should I feed my dog?

The amount of food your dog needs depends on their weight, age, activity level, and the caloric density of their food. This calculator uses veterinary-standard formulas to determine your dog's daily caloric needs.

Understanding RER and MER

RER (Resting Energy Requirement) is the number of calories your dog needs at rest. It's calculated as:

RER = 70 × (body weight in kg)⁰·⁷⁵

MER (Maintenance Energy Requirement) is the RER multiplied by an activity factor to account for daily energy needs.

Activity level multipliers

  • Inactive / Senior: 1.2×
  • Normal adult: 1.4×
  • Active: 1.6×
  • Very active / Working: 2.0×
  • Puppy: 2.5×
  • Weight loss: 1.0×
