How much water does a dog need?
The general guideline is that dogs should drink approximately 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight per day (about 55 mL/kg). Active dogs, puppies, and dogs in hot climates need more.
Factors affecting water intake
- Activity level and exercise intensity
- Temperature and humidity
- Dry food vs. wet food diet
- Health conditions (kidney disease, diabetes)
- Lactating or pregnant dogs need significantly more
Signs of dehydration
Watch for dry gums, sunken eyes, loss of skin elasticity (skin stays "tented" when pinched), lethargy, and decreased appetite.
