What is theoretical yield?
Theoretical yield is the maximum amount of product possible from a given amount of reactant — calculated assuming 100% conversion with no losses. Real reactions always produce less due to side reactions, equilibrium, and procedural losses.
Moles of product = Moles of reactant × (stoich. coefficient product / stoich. coefficient reactant)
Theoretical Yield = Moles of product × Molar mass of product
How to find the limiting reactant
When there are multiple reactants, the limiting reactant determines the theoretical yield. Calculate moles of product possible from each reactant — the smallest result defines the theoretical yield.
